Alternative Media's Role in Chicago's Journalism Ecosystem By focusing on issues and communities local to them, independent and alternative media outlets are helping diversify the coverage of news. These smaller organizations are often focused on a particular group or issue in a given issue area. The editorial decisions you make may be made by a smaller group that lacks resources and the capacity to hire professional journalist. Furthermore, many people behind such organizations also actively participate in social movements. Their work is often activist and adheres to normative values in social movement theory. This includes deliberative democracy participation, as well as alternative narratives that provide marginalized voices. At this crucial juncture, it is essential to understand how political circumstances influence these values and organization practices that support. These papers shed some light on these transformations. Politics plays an important role in understanding and studying media. Different political theories offer different views on democracy, the public sphere, and how these outlets are to function, which determines their interpretation. 2019; Figenschou and Frischlich 2019). While some researchers emphasize the concept of citizen’s media which encourages participation, others may focus on diversity in media coverage to counter ideology hegemony. A definition of alternative media is also important. Some authors use a relational frame to characterize alternative media as self-proclaimed correctives which challenge dominant discourses (Harlow, 2022). Other scholars adopt an analytical frame in order study the differences between this form of media and mainstream media. They found that some maintain a collective and participative culture as their staff increases and they produce more content. Their study indicates this change may influence whether these initiatives maintain their "alternativeness", while becoming more similar to professional actors. Block Club Chicago provides an example of this growing recognition, reporting on local events and issues within Chicago neighborhoods. This organization illustrates the importance of community journalism in bridging gaps among residents. It promotes civic participation and gives people the power to make their own decisions.
